Eurozone fears of a third recession

Mario Draghi made it quite clear to European leaders on Friday: implement structural economic reforms or face another Eurozone recession. Germany has welcomed the message, but are still keen to push debt discipline and further austerity. Economists have pointed out that a large scale U.S.-style bond-buying programme may be the only solution.

After over a decade involved in Afghanistan, the UK military base Camp Bastion has been handed back to Afghani security forces.

Merkel: I will block the PM on immigration

Angela Merkel is dead set against David Cameron’s plans to limit the freedom of movement within the EU. The British PM wants to push through this deal as part of the UK’s renegotiated relationship with Europe.

Protesters clash at North Korea border

Activists released balloons carrying thousands of leaflets expressing criticism of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un near the South Korean town of Gimpo. Local residents, fearing a backlash from the North, clashed with the activists after trying to get them to stop. North Korea slammed the activists as “human scum” and threatened that this kind of activity could start an “all-out” war.

Hong Kong protesters call off vote on government proposals

Protest leaders in Hong Kong have scrapped plans to hold a vote over whether or not to consent the government’s proposals and end their demonstrations. They claim that there was not enough dialogue between the protesters and the government before the poll was announced.

WHO gives the go-ahead to Ebola vaccine trials

Trials of Ebola vaccines could be rolled out in West Africa as early as the end of the year, according to the World Health Organisation. A range of clinical trials will be tested out in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea and they hope to produce preliminary results by April.

Iranian woman hung for killing alleged rapist

A 26-year old Iranian woman was hanged after being convicted of murdering the man she claimed had tried to rape her as a teenager.

Brazil decides

Set to be the closest run Presidential election in decades, Brazilian voters will have the chance to decide their nation’s future today. It’s a face-off between the incumbent President Dilma Rousseff and centrist Aecio Neves. Many believe that the main deciding factor of the election will be the middle-class vote from the industrialised south-east of Brazil.

Republicans criticise the US Ebola response

As I am sure many of you are aware, the midterm US Congressional elections are around the corner in November. In timely fashion, Republicans have amped up their criticism of the Obama administration’s response this week.
