Tougher market conditions. High volatility. Slumping commodity prices. Exorbitant debt.

These are the headlines describing the recent performance of emerging market economies, a group of middle-income countries that have become rapidly integrated into global markets since the mid-1980s. After being beset by various crises during the 1980s and 1990s, emerging markets came into their own during the 2000s, recording remarkable growth rates while keeping inflation and other potential problems largely under control.

The recent waves of turbulence rocking the markets that, according to EY, a consultancy, are expected to account for 50% of the global GDP, 38% of the world consumer spending and 55% of the world fixed capital investment by 2020, make them the centre of spotlight for policy-makers, academics, businesses and investors.

The LSE SU Emerging Markets Forum (EMF), the world’s largest student-run emerging markets conference, is a unique opportunity for current and future leaders to discuss, understand and shape these economies.

Over 200 industry-leading experts have spoken at the Forum in the past six years in the fields ranging from real estate and finance to commodities, pharmaceuticals and national security. These include academics, CEOs, central bank governors and world-famous investors. The conference also attracts widespread media coverage from Bloomberg, Time magazine, The Economist, BBC News, The WSJ, and the FT.

The 2016 Emerging Markets Forum promises to be an exceptional academic and networking experience, bringing together a leading speaker line-up with the brightest delegates from all degrees and universities around the world.

This year, the EMF welcomes Jim Rogers (Co-founder, Quantum Fund alongside George Soros), James Zhan (Director, UNCTAD), Nikhil Rathi (CEO, London Stock Exchange), Goh Kok Huat (COO, GIC; President, GIC Real Estate), General Sir Nick Houghton (Chief of Defence Staff, British Armed Forces), Vikas Seth (Head of EM for Investment Banking and Markets, Credit Suisse) and many other prominent experts.

The LSE SU EMF will take place at the Millennium Hotel, Mayfair, London, on the 4th and 5th of March in conjunction with our partners London Stock Exchange Group, Bloomberg, White & Case, and the LSE Centre for Macroeconomics.
